Four emergency warnings are in place for dozens of small East Gippsland communities where residents are in danger, as out-of-control bushfires burn across Victoria.
Incident controller Ben Rankine, who is in charge of firefighters in East Gippsland, told ABC Radio on Monday that the conditions were the worst he had seen since Black Saturday.
CFA Fire Trucks travelled in convoy towards East Gippsland on Friday ahead of expected dangerous fire weather. However, the conditions on Monday are such that firefighters won't be able to stand and fight on the edge of the fire. They have been pulled back into mobile strike teams. The plan is for them, plus air crews, to rapidly attack any areas of fire that break out.
East Gippsland Shire is twice the size of Greater Melbourne and much of it is thickly forested bush land and national parks.
