The former PM's intervention ups the pressure on her successor to find a way through the weeds of international diplomacy
Poland has already offered to send Soviet-era MiG-29 jets to Ukraine – planes which Ukrainian pilots “are able to operate on a daily basis”, said Polish President Andrzej Duda. However, he added that he requires assent from other Nato states to do so.
Mr Duda told Sky News on Friday that Ukraine would “also need modern planes, fighter jets” to give them the upper hand, but that this may not be possible for some time. However, Ms Truss’s intervention ups the pressure on the Prime Minister to find a way through the weeds of international diplomacy on the issue. He has also faced calls to act from Boris Johnson – who has rejected technical wrangling over whether it would be “practical” for the UK to provide planes, insisting “it can be done”.
The international spat over jets mirrors previous wrangling over whether to provide tanks, anti-tank weaponry and long-range weapons – all of which culminated in decisions to supply Ukraine with what it needs. Ms Truss said: “I can tell you from working inside the Government, that we did all we could as quickly as we could to persuade allies, and we have built up now an alliance of countries supplying those weapons and I can’t wait to see the tanks, and I can’t wait to see the fighter jets in Ukraine to help those brave Ukrainians.”
