with many still believing the Prime Minister will do well to survive the week let alone fight the next electionHaving reached out to the more moderate wing of the party on Monday evening, she has bought herself some time. It now makes the next 48 hours critical for Ms Truss if she has any hope of clinging on to power.

Far greater than any feeling of alliance is the Tories’ survival instinct. Ms Truss then faces the very public humiliation of squaring off against Sir Keir Starmer in Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, having been forced to junk the package of policies she so willingly trumpeted just seven days before.
