. This week, as Parliament returns from a two-week recess which saw markets go haywire and total chaos at Conservative conference, Ms Truss will start to rebuild.
When she was Foreign Secretary, regular “fizz with Liz” get-togethers were taken as an early sign of her leadership ambitions. Those were usually held at the 5 Hertford Street private members’ club; No 10 will provide altogether glitzier surroundings. But ultimately, MPs will judge the Prime Minister by results. One party grandee says of his colleagues: “They are taking this selfish, programmatic view of ‘what does this mean for me in 2024?'”, with Labour on course for a landslide victory at the next general election. If that starts to change, with Ms Truss’s own poll ratings improving from their current low levels, her position will be much more secure.
