With only around a quarter of councils reporting their results by early this morning, it wasBut so far it is clear that the Tories are taking a battering at the hands of both Labour and the Liberal Democrats, confirming theA Tory source said the party had long been braced for a “tough night”, adding: “It’s always disappointing to lose hardworking local Conservative councillors.”is their geographical spread.
Previous rounds of local elections have shown the Tories making gains in places like Teesside even as they lose ground elsewhere, but so far that does not seem to be happening this time around. Mr Sunak has narrowed Labour’s polling leads and has much healthier personal poll ratings than Boris Johnson did . He is sure to say that he is leading the Tories along the long road to recovery, and to emphasise that this will take time – possibly true, though little consolation for MPs who have so far given him the benefit of the doubt but will not have unlimited patience.
