San Diego's Global Action Research Center trains youth of color in its Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy to take on leadership positions in local environmental justice movement

The students who graduated from the Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy earlier this month left equipped with information about climate change, a network of peers and mentors, and experience in research and public educational outreach to address environmental injustice.

, a local organization that works to empower local youth to improve programs and policies for their peers.Sanchez and Summer Kocher, a senior at University City High School who lives in Linda Vista and is part of the, which prepares public high school students to be active in their communities, took some time to talk about their experience in the Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy and their commitment to environmental justice.

In school, it’s mainly emphasized that we all face the impacts of climate change, like air pollution, food deserts, heat waves, droughts; but less is talked about how certain demographics suffer the effects much more than others. Honestly, it’s pretty disturbing to know that zip codes are just such a potent factor in determining the quality of life and health for an individual.
