Locals say salvage logging operations now underway in the Wombat State Forest are clearing too much vegetation in areas government has promised will be a national park.

Residents have raised the alarm over the operations in the Wombat State Forest.Last June, wild storms and floods ripped through 2 million hectares of public land in Victoria, uprooting trees and snapping them like matchsticks. The Wombat State Forest near Daylesford was strewn with fallen trees. Authorities estimated it could take two years to clear roads and debris.

While Wombat Forestcare, a community environment group, supports the appropriate reduction of the fire risk along roads and tracks, this was “complete overkill”, Osborne said. Ellen Sandell, the deputy leader of the Victorian Greens, said the community was rightly concerned, saying if the government was serious about tackling Victoria’s dwindling biodiversity it would rapidly create the parks and protect them.

“The work undertaken in the Wombat State Forest is in direct response to removing debris and treating hazardous trees resulting from last year’s storm events,” they said.
