Oil giant Equinor has won environmental approval on controversial plans to conduct deep-sea drilling in the Bight, infuriating locals and activists. 9News
Responsible for reviewing and approving the proposed plans is Australia's national body for offshore petroleum facilities, NOPSEMA.
"Aside from the immediate damage to marine life, we simply can't afford to take that oil out of the ground, there's a bigger issue at stake here." "These latest incidents show that Equinor simply can't be trusted to operate in the pristine waters of Australia's Great Australian Bight without risk of serious incidents that could coat Australia's much-loved beaches in black oil," Jamie Hanson, Greenpeace Australia Pacific Head of Campaigns, said.
Based on oil spill modelling conducted by oceanographers, Elliston would be one of the first communities to deal with an oil spill if Equinor is given permission to drill. Director of the Wilderness Society in South Australia, Peter Owen, who has been heavily involved in the Fight for the Bight campaign in recent months, said the new evidence of Equinor's history of accidents is simply further evidence of a plan doomed to fail.
