Melburnians will proudly talk their city up, particularly to visitors, while Sydneysiders don’t see the value in what they have. That needs to change.

Sydney airport, about 2pm. People are milling around the gate lounge waiting for their flight – it’s delayed, shockingly, because of the “late arrival of the aircraft”.

That isn’t a wild thing to hear from a Sydneysider. In fact – and I say this as someone who calls Sydney home – it’s pretty much standard. You ask most people in this sparkling harbour city if they like living here and they will say something along the lines of, “Yeah, it’s all right.”This is anecdotal, of course, but my feeling is that people of Sydney tend not to rave about their hometown.

Residents of Sydney might moan about the public transport, and fair enough, but you also have to take into account the fact the Manly Ferry is public transport. As a visitor to this city you get a harbour cruise in one of the most beautiful places in the world for about $10. There are restaurants in Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide that I wish were in this city. However, if you want to eat the food of the world, affordable cuisine cooked with skill and passion by people with heritage in all corners of the globe, then you can’t do better than Sydney. The diversity and the quality here is incredible, particularly in the west.
