A coalition of international law enforcement breaches the world’s most prolific ransomware syndicate, LockBit, which left prints on the DP World hack.
When Vaughan Shanks saw that hackers using what appeared to be LockBit software had brought down 40 per cent of Australia’s port capacity in November last year, he thought: “They’ve gone a step too far”.at the time that the breach was so severe law enforcement would “release the hounds” on the criminals responsible.In fact, law enforcement from 10 countries including Australia were already closing in on LockBit, a Russian-linked gang that operated the world’s most prolific ransomware syndicate.
Early last year LockBit apologised after its software was used to breach the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, showing some PR savvy.But on Tuesday, LockBit’s website was replaced with a message from international police forces reading “this site is now under the control of law enforcement”.
That data includes encryption keys, which will allow authorities to fix networks infected with LockBit, and data that the criminals stole and claimed to have deleted, throwing doubt on the value of paying ransoms.
