NHS trusts are losing staff to locum agencies offering as much as five times the hourly pay in what has been dubbed a ‘failure’ for the Tories.

‘First of all, the money rates are a lot better but that’s not the main reason,’ he said.‘We see doctors posting videos talking about their burnout all the time, and there are so many jobs out there, the NHS is always short-staffed so locum jobs will always be available.’

Locum agencies specialise in the placement of medical staff on a temporary and permanent basis, and health chiefs shelled out £3 billion on their services in 2021.They have come under the spotlight as junior doctors are set to walk out, joining ambulance workers and nurses in strikes over pay. Earlier this year, a survey by the British Medical Association showed half of hospital doctors plan to leave the NHS in the next 12 months.

Almost one in 10 said they planned to leave the profession for a new career, and 57% have considered leaving the country or had already left to work abroad.More:
