Blues winger Zac Lomax managed to put in an Origin performance for the ages, despite needing his knee drained on the eve of the must-win clash in Melbourne.

As Zac Lomax soared above Queensland’s Murray Taulagi to catch a Mitchell Moses’ bomb, you would have had no idea he needed to have his knee drained just 24 hours earlier.NSW to a 38-18 victoryBlues coach Michael Maguire downplayed the injury after the game, saying Lomax just had “a little bump” and “a little bruise”, but Lomax said he picked up knee issue in the Blues game one defeat in Sydney.

Lomax said he could feel it throughout the game, but it didn’t bother him enough to stop him from his kicking duties and an 18-point haul for the Blues. When asked about his first try, the winger put it down to Moses’ eye for those game-changing moments - the Blues halfback could see the one-on-one between Lomax and Taulagi, and trusted his winger to get the job done.

“‘Moey’ is obviously one of the best halves in the game for a reason, so he sees it, he just makes his teammates around him better,” Lomax said.“You don’t know whether you can beat someone , but you just hope for the best really. Everyone in Origin is such a class player, everyone’s their attributes, you just try and bring them and put them on show once you get to the arena. I just try and compete the best I can.

“He kicked two goals from the sidelines, so it just goes to show that these big games are something there that he goes after, like all of them,” Maguire said.“You look at that and, he’s doing that at training,” Maguire said. “He practices that. There are reasons why players get to the quality of who they are, it’s because they practice it. You see every game he’s played, he’s competing. Obviously, we were able to isolate that edge, he went up and scored a good try.

“The best part about that was the fact that you saw all the team get around him when he scored that try, that was really pleasing. You … see the enjoyment the players are getting out of their teammates coming up with plays like that because that’s his quality that he brings.”
