The mayor of London has declared a “major incident” in a bid to help ease the pressure on the capital’s hospitals.

Mayor Sadiq Khan made the decision after Britain reported its largest 24-hour increase in COVID cases since the pandemic began.

Over 90,000 cases were reported along with 125 COVID related deaths – with London responsible for 26,000 of the new cases. A major incident enables different public agencies to cooperate and coordinate more closely and also acts as a warning that emergency services cannot guarantee their normal level of response.
