LONDON’S FIRST memorial recognising the transatlantic slave trade has been unveiled in an emotional ceremony. , is a horticultural art installation that aims to acknowledge the transatlantic slave trade.
“The drum symbol is drawn from the Adinkra pictogram, which is one of the ancient symbols used by the Akan people of West Africa. Brent Council commissioned a review into whether the park’s name was still appropriate following the Black Lives Matter movement and revelations former British Prime Minister had benefitted from the transatlantic slave trade.
He said: “There needs to be a more complexed and nuanced representation of history full stop in Britain because there are multiple atrocities committed by the British Empire. “I live on a boat myself so there was a personal association, as a vessel is home and also a place of retreat,” he added. The artist said what is key about the project is that it is a “living artwork” that is made up of “three gardens” which will change throughout the year.
