Mohamad and Sahar, a newly engaged couple from Lebanon, were separated by the escalating conflict in the Middle East. After a month of agonizing uncertainty, Sahar received her visa to Australia, reuniting with Mohamad. While grateful for their newfound safety in Sydney, the couple remains deeply worried for their families still in Lebanon.
In the days after he applied for his fiancee Sahar’s visa, Mohamad checked his email continuously, hoping for good news.
For hours, they were stuck in traffic with Sahar’s family, inching from danger as Israeli fighter jets roared overhead.A fortnight later, the couple realised they may never see one another again when Mohamad and his family fled to the safety of Australia on the first Australian government-secured flight out of the country via Cyprus.“I was very excited to be here,” Sahar says. “When he left I felt empty because I was used to him being next to me.
Now in Sydney, Mohamad’s family still scour social media and news websites each day for updates from Lebanon – especially as Mohamad’s father stayed behind to care for his elderly mother.
