Jim Chalmers has made tackling long-term unemployment a major priority for the government.
Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers has put fixing long-term unemployment as a priority on the government’s Jobs and Skills Summit agenda, as new Treasury analysis reveals too many people are stuck in the dole queue.
But the median long-term unemployed person in Australia spends more than two years, or 122 weeks, on the sidelines. “Making sure people can gain the skills they need and removing barriers to the work will be one of the key topics we’ll be discussing.” Men comprised 58.4 per cent of long-term unemployed in June. People aged over 55 made up 41.6 per cent of the long-term unemployed. About 80 per cent of the long-term unemployed don’t have a university degree.
