A 229-foot-long cloudlike sculpture will be hung over North High Street Downtown in June, becoming the longest piece of public art in the city.
. Edwards is paying an unidentified amount for the design and installation of the sculpture, representing the largest private contribution to public art in the history of Columbus, according to the Museum of Art.
Edwards plans to donate the sculpture to the museum, which will oversee its maintenance as part of its permanent collection. “This piece will be the north star for Columbus’ new culture-centric compass," Edwards said in the news release."I envision this to be the first drop in the pond, sending waves throughout the Gay Street district.”The sculpture would be suspended by cables attached to nearby buildings. At its lowest point, it would hang about 35 feet above ground, according to a 2021 presentation to the city.
City officials hope the sculpture will become a tourist draw, like the Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago. "Current will be a beacon and a beckon, drawing people from across the city and region. It’s going to be a defining image for our Downtown and put Columbus on the map as a community that cares about — and invests in — transformational public art,” Mayor Andrew Ginther said in the news release. “When you visit the historic corner of Gay and High Streets, you’ll know you’ve arrived at the nexus of culture in Columbus.
