Texas held on for a pivotal road win over Kansas State Saturday night.
Texas running back Bijan Robinson escapes a tackle by Kansas State safety Kobe Savage during the first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, in Manhattan, Kan. MANHATTAN, Kan. — DeMarvion Overshown took a long, deep inhale while settling into his seat in the postgame media room Saturday night, as if some suffocating weight had finally been lifted off his chest.
“It feels good knowing how hard we practiced this week,” Overshown continued. “We had to give it all we had and for a little bit they had their little plays they were making, but at the end of the day we calmed down and were able to get the win.” Teammates will probably forgive Robinson for getting tripped up 9 yards shy of what would’ve been his second touchdown of the day. His first, a 36-yard run where he vaulted one lunging defender and left everyone else in the dust, was vintage Robinson, and it put Texas up 7-0 after its opening drive.
Kansas State managed to slow Robinson and Johnson in the second half. And Robinson was stonewalled on Texas’ final offensive possession, losing 5 yards on a failed pitch on third-and-4. But that was due to inadequate blocking rather than any fault of Robinson.Texas gained 352 yards, scored 31 points and averaged 8.6 yards per play in the first half. It gained 114 yards, scored three points and averaged 3.8 yards per play in the second half.
Martinez flung a pass toward 5-foot-7 receiver Phillip Brooks and Texas nickel corner Jahdae Barron got a hand on the ball to disrupt the play and force a turnover on downs. The Longhorns then drove down the field and tacked three points onto their lead with a 28-yard field goal from kicker Bert Auburn.
