Animals Matter: Longtimers at San Antonio shelters need foster care and permanent homes

Most people adopt pets that are younger than 1 year old within a few days of their arrival. Some dogs and cats, however, may remain at a shelter for months, even years. Sometimes, it’s because an animal is shy. Pets often get passed over for more charismatic pets who know how to beg for attention. Sometimes, it’s because a pet has a health problem that an adopter doesn’t want to manage. Sometimes, it’s the breed. But most of the time, it’s because they are older than 12 months old.

Take Dave, for example, who arrived at ADL when he was 2 years old. This fun-loving Staffordshire terrier mix is a staff favorite. He is treat-motivated, which is code for"easy to train." He already knows some basic obedience commands and is primed to learn. But Dave has been waiting for a home for more than four years. Then there’s Michael, a 3-year-old Lab mix, who arrived at ADL when he was 9 months old.

Geoffry, a 2-year-old terrier mix, has been at ADL for 518 days. May, a 3-year-old American bulldog, was adopted once but then surrendered back to the shelter when her family could no longer care for her. She’s been waiting more than 500 days. Lois, a 1-year-old Lab/hound mix who does excellent in foster homes and loves kids and other dogs, has been waiting 286 days.David Paul Morris/Getty Images
