The tunnel is undergoing 18 months of improvement works to upgrade lighting
The tunnel has been closing overnight since June, and is the subject of a comprehensive lighting upgrade in order to save on energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint. The work has meant that, overnight, cross river travellers are having to use the Wallasey tunnel and other routes.
Updates for the tunnel are set to cost around £11m and take about 18 months. They will apparently help towards Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram's target to be net zero by 2040 – a decade before the national government.
“The Mersey Tunnels are an essential part of our city region transport network and with increasing energy prices, they are becoming more expensive to maintain. “We receive no central Government support, so it is up to the Combined Authority to source the funds to keep them running safely and efficiently. These works will help us achieve that in the long-term.The lighting upgrade project, supported by the Liverpool City Region’s Levelling Up funding, will bring the Queensway Tunnel in line with its counterpart in Wallasey, the Kingsway tunnel, which became more energy efficient thanks to completion of a similar upgrade in June 2018.
The tunnel is currently being closed each night between 9pm and 6.30am while the upgrade work takes place.
