The Opposition has labelled Labor’s pushback on an overhaul of religious discrimination laws due to lacking bipartisan support an “excuse” by the government to not go ahead with the reform.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has rubbished Anthony Albanese's"disingenuous" explanation for delaying changes to Australia's religious discrimination laws after the PM claimed the outcome of the bill hinged on bipartisan support.

Mr Albanese is understood to have raised Labor’s proposed amendments to the Religious Discriminations Act with the pair on a flight back from the funeral of Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon on Monday. “I said we hadn’t seen the report, we hadn’t seen the bill, and we would have a discussion internally as to what our position would be. That’s the essence of the conversation, there was no ‘if you do this’ and ‘if you don’t do that’,” Mr Dutton told reporters outside Parliament House on Tuesday.

Questioned on whether the Coalition would support Labor’s proposed legislation, the Opposition Leader said the decision could only be made once “we know what’s before us”. Changes to religious freedoms have been a contentious matter of policy debate in the last few years since having taken centre stage during the latter years of the former Coalition government.
