‘Losing its green heart’: Why a Sydney council plans to sell off green space to developers | smh_andrew
Federal and state Liberal politicians have lined up to condemn a north shore council that is attempting to sell off open space for housing.
“It is considered that the site is not suitable for organised or active sports due to the physical constraints on the site, as well as proximity to residential properties,” the agenda said. Paul Fletcher, federal member for Bradfield, last week wrote to councillors to say he supported the site being left as community green space.“The issue is not just the amount of green space – which Ku-ring-gai is fortunate to have a good amount of – but also its accessibility to residents,” he said. “Green space conveniently close to existing houses has a distinctive value, hence my advocacy on this issue.
The debate over the future of the old bowling club follows similar controversy over plans to sell off sports fields in Marsfield and a Ngai said his personal preference was to retain both the Gordon and East Roseville bowling clubs for recreation. “We’ve been working with community groups to oppose the rezoning plan, as we believe Gordon desperately needs more green space,” he said.calling on the council to retain the old bowling club as green open space has attracted more than 1000 signatures.
