The Australian motorsport community has been rocked after drag racer Sam Fenech was killed in an “enormous” crash at Willowbank Raceway, west of Brisbane. 7NEWS
Video of the crash showed Fenech’s car taking off, rising over the wall and crashing into a camera tower seconds later.
“It is with great sadness that Top Fuel Racing Australia announces that Sam Fenech, driver of the Fabietti Racing Doorslammer, has succumbed to injuries suffered in a racing accident at Willowbank Raceway and passed away this evening,” Top Fuel Australia said.Drag racer Sam Fenech has died in a race accident while racing at Willowbank Raceway.Top Fuel host Wade Aunger had earlier asked for sensitivity when he spoke to fans and the broadcast during the delay after the crash.
Few fans had left Willowbank prior to the decision to call off the event while Fenech was still receiving treatment.Supercars driver Todd Hazelwood mourned the loss of Fenech after attending the event.“To witness this tragedy at Willowbank Raceway tonight is absolutely heartbreaking.
