A medical student, Hadi Nazari, was found after a 13-day search in challenging terrain in New South Wales, Australia. Volunteers followed clues, including hiking poles and discarded trash, to locate him.

Specialist volunteers followed a trail of clues during a 13-day search that involved up to 300 people. Hadi Nazari remains in Cooma Hospital being treated for dehydration after he spent almost a fortnight in what is described as the most rugged terrain in NSW . He said the medical student was eventually found about 10 kilometers from where a command post had been set up. 'To be able to self extricate over the other side there is just phenomenal.

' The search for Hadi Nazari focused on waterways after hiking poles and rubbish were found on New Year's Eve near Kosciuszko Creek. It was the team's first day on the trail, and they covered a 12-kilometer area over a period of 13 hours. 'Which was quite exciting because this is a very remote area, people don't travel down here at all,' he said. Captain Ney said the discovery of a bag of rubbish and a human footprint soon after 'confirmed we were on the right trail'. 'Had we got out there a few days earlier, we might have caught up with him'. 'It wasn't really a pattern for us, it was all speculation, it was our best guess,' Captain Ney said. 'We're not gun trackers, we couldn't actually follow every footstep, but it was very difficult with the clues that were found … to come up with a definite pattern.' Zac Zaharias, who is a senior guide with Peak Learning Adventures, said he had climbed the Hannels Spur Track, which Mr Nazari had been hiking on, since the 1980s. 'It's definitely considered one of the hardest walks, and that also attracts people because it is hard,' he said. 'It's a very narrow track. It's marked with orange triangular disks, although they are sort of spread out and sometimes not easy to see'. 'The vegetation gets quite thick and there's a lot of dead falls, so if it's not cleared it could be quite hard going through there,' he said. 'A few times I've had to crawl on my hands and knees to get under the tea tree'. 'In places up to 40 degrees, 45 degrees in slope, with thick vegetation,' he sai
