When it comes to a weekly shop today, many of us will head to or order online from the likes of Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, or Sainsbury's.
This list is not intended to be comprehensive, we've selected a number of brands lost to the past. The '70s favourites on sale included Cadbury's Smash at 13p; Vesta Curries at 18½p; a tin - yes a tin - of Heinz Beefburgers at 18p; and a tin of Tyne Brand Sliced Pork at 16p½. Plenty of the products are still supermarket staples in 2024 such as a bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup for 12p; Bird's Eye Fish Fingers for 19½p; Bird's Eye Garden Peas for 13½p; and Bird's Eye Cod Fillets for 27p.
A Somerfield advert in the Daily Mirror from 1995 shows a number of price drops and items on offer. We can assume similar prices were found in their Merseyside branches at the time. When he returned, he laid the plans for converting Lennon shops to self service and it soon became a public company, seeing old cinemas like the Scala in Ormskirk Street, St Helens and The Lyme House, in Eccleston Street, Prescot, bought and converted into supermarkets. Kwik Save Kwik Save, with its familiar logo of white block italics against a red background, grew to become a common site in Britain after the first store opened in Rhyl in 1959. The business adopted the model of successful continental supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl, buying a limited range of goods on favourable payment terms.
Items on the list include toothpaste for 78p, Heinz Baked Beans for 23p, Flora 48p, Pot Noodle for 67p and penguin Biscuits for 66p. The most expensive item on the list was Ovaltine for £2.25, but you can also see the likes of Oxo Cubes costing 64p and Pearl Drops for 69p.
