Bondi Junction mass killer Joel Cauchi’s parents have spoken of their devastation at the actions of their “very sick boy”.

Acknowledging the suffering of the victims’ families, the couple said nothing could give them closure about their son’s senseless act of violence except knowing he would have not committed a crime of that gravity had he been in a stable state of mind. She explained Joel’s mental condition was fairly under control while he was under regular medication living at his family home in Toowoomba, but that his health deteriorated upon moving to Brisbane and stopping the meds.
“We are just normal people who brought up our son as best as we could. We did what we could for him.” The parents said despite his mental health, Joel attended university, where he was “top of the class”, and graduated with a teaching degree. His mother explained he was loved by peers and teachers. Mr Cauchi added his son was deeply troubled:"He was a tormented soul, tormented, and frustrated, and I'm sorry that he's done this to your children and this nation."On Sunday evening, the parents also released their first public statement addressing the stabbing in which they expressed support for the NSW policewoman who shot their son dead, saying “she was only doing her job to protect others and we hope she is coping alright”.
