Dean Smethurst had begun to work out what he could spend the money on and 'cracked open the bubbly'
A National Lottery winner who called everyone he knew thinking he had scooped £50,000 was later dealt a devastating blow.
However, when the lottery phone lines opened again the next morning, Dean was given the devastating news that his luck was out. His win actually turned out to be three lucky dips on a future game - worth just £2 each. "She inputted it and said: ‘Well done, you’ve won...three lucky dips’. I asked her if she was sure, and then I asked to speak to a manager. I am absolutely gutted.
Unfortunately, the phone lines were closed for the night so Dean went online and learned that he had potentially won at least £50,000. He then set about about sharing the good news with his nearest and dearest. "As the Wednesday draw was in the process of taking place, it looks like this was an automated message instead which would have been given for any win. I was absolutely gutted. It is back to the drawing board now."
