Emma Cashman, stung by stepsister’s suicide, discovers coach Charlie Cleaves relates to that very pain in his life, creating an uncommon bond between player and coach.
When your stepsister, who was also your best friend, dies by suicide, of course, you’re completely devastated, crushed, lost, hurt, lonely, even angry.
It was 14 years ago when Cleaves’ partner with the U.S. Marshals Service and best friend, called to tell him to please hurry over, that he was terribly depressed. One of the things he knew and could convey was how getting out on the soccer field, even two hours a day, could be helpful. “Practice is definitely more therapeutic. When you’re playing a game you have a lot of adrenaline, a lot of excitement, the crowd is cheering. There’s some anxiety. For me, the game is more peaceful because you can focus on soccer.Cashman said she was closer to her stepsister than she is with her blood sisters, doing everything together except play soccer.
When Cashman talked with Cleaves, she discovered that he was someone she could talk with about anything.
