International travel restrictions and social distancing did not put a dampener on the wedding plans of a young couple from Australia and Indonesia, even while physically separated by thousands of kilometres.
Sydney man and ABC journalist, Max Walden, and Shaffira Gayatri, from Indonesia's city of Surabaya, have been planning their wedding since July last year before the pandemic threw their former plans into disarray.
It wasn't until the day before they were supposed to get married that Max and Shaffira decided to take the plunge. "The Ijab Kabul was nerve-racking because in Indonesia it's very important to say [the whole verse] in one breath," Max said. Max and Shaffira have already made plans to hold a wedding reception party in Surabaya and Sydney next year, but it will all depend on conditions with the pandemic."We haven't been able to meet each other in six months, I'm really looking forward to having Shaffira come to Melbourne," Max said.
Max's mother, Inara Walden, said she really embraces and appreciates her new daughter-in-law's culture. Civita Patriana said she was crying tears of joy as she watched her closest friend, who she calls Fira, get married.
