Lovie Smith, Pep Hamilton say they 'underachieved'
The Texans uncovered a fourth-round gem in rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who rushed for 939 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. But that the passing game failed to flourish in Hamilton’s run-oriented scheme is an indictment on the system’s execution.
Injuries limited Hamilton’s firepower, as did the unfortunate battle second-round receiver John Metchie III has needed to wage against leukemia since his July diagnosis. This eventually uncapped Hamilton’s creativity, perhaps too late. But the third-time NFL play-caller wound up doing less with more than Kelly’s offense was equipped with a season ago — not a vote of confidence when Caserio must decide who will guide a potential quarterback taken No. 1 overall.
“It’s always, our goal as offensive coaches, we always talk about putting our players in the best position to be successful,” Hamilton said. “But even deeper than that, it’s really just situational football. There’s going to come a time in the game where it’s not about necessarily just trying to create a matchup. It’s about us putting our guys in better position to have an advantage before the ball is snapped.
Still, Smith’s system has improved in nearly every metric beyond its troubling run defense. An aggressive front has produced 10 sacks in the last five games, a secondary hit by Stingley’s season-ending hamstring injury has seven interceptions in that span; but getting frequently gashed by Jaguars running back Travis Etienne last week resumed what has been more realistic.for this team? It is a word that must for now be left omitted.
“I think it’s safe to say we haven’t,” Smith said. “Everybody has high goals for winning every game, winning the division. There’s a lot of things that we didn’t get accomplished. Was that realistic? I don’t know. But those were our goals. There’s a game left to go in the season, and what you can get accomplished, I think, as long as you get a chance to keep playing, you can add something to this 2022 season’s story, and that’s what we’re going to do.
