A former employee of an aged care facility in regional NSW has spoken about the dramatic change that took place when the facility's management was taken over by the international healthcare group, Bupa.
"It was really sad — we had a lot of really good nurses who just couldn't do it because there are nicer places to work for, and bullying got a lot worse.""It's a small country town, there's limited people who would want to work in aged care," she said.In a statement, the Chief Operating Officer of Bupa Aged Care Australia Carolyn Cooper said that last year was the first time the Eden care home had received a sanction, since the company took it over in 2013.
relating to medication management, clinical care, staffing, human resources and behaviour management. "We are committed to fixing the issues identified by the Department [of Health]," Ms Cooper said in the statement."We take all bullying allegations seriously, with procedures in place to ensure our care home is a safe and supportive place to live and work.""Sometimes [the residents] could have the same meal three times a week, and serving sizes got a bit smaller," she said.
"No one ever starved, there was never a shortage of food, it was just the rotation, there seemed to be the same food all the time, and that's what the residents used to complain about.""Our kitchen staff have regular discussions with residents about their meals, likes and dislikes," Ms Cooper said.Surprised by incident
After the incident earlier this week, where a resident was found with maggots in his head wound, Dee said she was genuinely surprised."You do have difficult residents that trying to put a dressing on, they would just immediately take it off.She said wound care was always performed by a member of the clinical staff, never by care staff.
