Hundreds attended the event that unveiled Lucy the Elephant's $2.4 million renovation.
The National Historical Landmark, located in Margate just south of Atlantic City, was closed for 15 months for the much-needed makeover.
Lucy lovers and supporters looked up at the six-story elephant as Margate’s Dan Walsh began to sing a “Lucy the Elephant” song he wrote. “I can’t help but think that for many, many children who come here, this is the first time they’re visiting a National Historic Landmark,” said Dorothy Guzzo, the executive director of the New Jersey Historic Trust, the organization responsible for administering the grants.“They love Lucy,” said Shehan. “We’d come to see her like every week.”
To save the attraction from demolition that year, the Save Lucy Committee led the effort to carry the 90-ton elephant via trailer to her current address. When Lucy made that move in 1970, many thought that she wasn’t going to make it, joked Assemblyman Don Guardian, R-Atlantic, who was a teenager when she was moved.
