'I was trying to find my Adele moment' 🎵 Luke Evans signed a record deal after his critically acclaimed part in Beauty and the Beast. Now he has an old-school singing special coming to the BBC for Christmas 🟠 chris_mandle interviews TheRealLukevans
Vocal exercises help and he gets me to do one with him – “I’m not a pheasant plucker/But a pheasant plucker’s son/And I’ll sit here plucking pheasants/’Til the pheasant plucking’s done” – which, in my rushed state, ends up sounding too lewd to print in a newspaper. “I can kill a cough in 10 minutes,” he says, looking proud of himself. “I’ve all sorts of drinks, tinctures, tablets, and nasal sprays.
He takes it seriously, is his point. There are times I sense a lot of pressure resting on those impressive shoulders. “People are relying on me,” he says. “If I didn’t open my mouth and sing those songs, then the album wouldn’t get made.” Being a born entertainer exerts a pull that has powered his career for 22 years. But Evans is learning that being a singer offers up a different kind of entertainment to acting, which is largely an exercise in how convincingly you can become other people. Being a singer means letting people connect with you, and while choosing the covers for the album, Evans also took the opportunity to write his own songs, collaborating with songwriter Amy Wadge .
Work was on hold. “All I had to do was get through each day and try to feel positive at the end of it,” he says. As the sun came up over the Atlantic, Evans was putting pen to paper, and he found comfort in the act of falling in love. The sky and the sea were so brilliant and blue that he sometimes struggled to see where one ended and the other began. “I was able to reflect on the stuff I didn’t think about all the time.
Evans explains his tree is up so early because he’s going to perform in Japan, so is taking a week to let his hair down while he’s there. Days later, he will post videos on Instagram of the things he’s seen: steaming bowls of ramen noodles, temples, koi carp the size of a loaf of bread. But it won’t last long: Evans is scheduled to film an undisclosed movie again in January on his return, which might be just the way he likes it. “I wouldn’t mind taking a year off,” he admits.
