AFL great Luke Hodge has taken aim at Essendon after their disappointing Gather Round performance against Port Adelaide. The Bombers were smashed to the tune of 69 points by a rampaging Power side in what was easily their worst performance of the season. The much-talked about ‘Essendon edge’ was nowhere to be seen, but alarmingly they also failed in the one area where they had excelled at.
“Time and time again he was bursting from the stoppage, no pressure on him, coming out the front,” he added. “At what stage do the Essendon midfielders, who were so good for the previous three games, sit back and go, ‘hang on why don’t we have a sweeper there?’ “It’s 360 degrees from where the ruckmen are, the ball could go any way, and there’s only three players in there so there’s going to be areas that you can’t cover. I understand that.
