Luke Thompson is concerned his reputation has been damaged after he was found guilty of an eye gouge against James Tamou during Saturday's game | sarah_keoghan SMHsport
The judiciary council reviewed multiple angles of the incident and heard submissions over two hours before finding Thompson guilty of "careless dangerous contact".
"If I felt Luke was going to go into his next game and do damage to someone's eye I wouldn't be here," he said. "I full-heartedly believe that his intentions weren't to do some damage." Thompson defended his own actions by saying he was "completely unaware" at the time that his fingers were in his eye socket. The NRL's lawyer Peter McGrath said the charge was a "serious allegation" and carried more weight due to Tamou's "position in the game". He also said that Tamou's attitude after the fact did not take away from the "seriousness" of the charge reported on-field.
"When he gripped player Tamou, he was aware, he had to been aware....that his fingers were in contact [with his eye]."
