Uber and Lyft have announced they will cover the legal fees of any driver who is sued under the Texas abortion law, which bans women from having a medical abortion after six weeks.

The law, which came into effect on Wednesday, also punishes anyone aiding an abortion - including those who unknowingly transport women to clinics.

"Lyft has created a Driver Legal Defense Fund to cover 100 per cent of legal fees for drivers sued under SB8 while driving on our platform.
