M1 diversion routes as huge tanker fire closes motorway both ways

Emergency services and traffic officers are at the scene

Full diversion routes have been released for drivers along a stretch of the M1 near Nottinghamshire which has been closed amid a huge tanker fire. The East Midlands division of National Highways said at around 11am on Tuesday that the M1 had been closed in both directions between junction 29 and junction 28 near Mansfield.

The entry slip road in both directions at junction 29 has also been closed, with emergency services currently at the scene. Traffic officers from National Highways are also on the scene to assist with traffic management. Full diversion routes have now been released as the incident continues. For drivers heading southbound, National Highways says they should follow the hollow square diversion symbol on road signs.This will mean drivers exiting onto the A617 at junction 29, continuing eastbound on the road for around 8 kilometres.

For drivers heading northbound, they should follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol. This means they should exit onto the A38 eastbound at junction 28 and follow it for 7.5 kilometres, before taking the A6075 Mansfield and Ashfield Regeneration Route until it links up with the A617. Northbound drivers should then follow the A617 westbound until it re-joins the M1 at junction 29. Follow live updates on this ongoing incident in our blog here.
