Avoid the area if you can
The northbound stretch of the M1 near East Midlands Airport is being closed due to a 'serious' crash. Highways England said the closure was to do with the 'severity of injuries'.
They are currently blocking off the carriageway between junction 23 for Loughborough and junction 23a for the A453 and East Midlands Airport. In the most recent update, National Highways: East Midlands said: "M1 northbound between J23 and J23a is now being closed after the earlier collision. "Due to the severity of injuries involved @LeicsPoliceRPU have taken the decision to conduct an investigation in to the incident. We'll provide a further updates re: diversion and traffic shortly."Traffic was initially held following the two-car collision, in which one of the cars overturned. Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene.
