This $33 accessory adds a selection of essential ports to your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air
The killer addition for me is the gigabit Ethernet socket. I use a wired connection whenever possible, and the lack of a dedicated Ethernet port on the MacBook is a big miss. The Ethernet port sits at the top of the Hub, as if you were plugging into the back of the laptop, and is super-convenient for those of us who demand wired connections for cloud gaming and other low-latency applications.So, yes – the “5-in-1” name of this hub is slightly disingenuous.
I was initially worried that the design of the Hub would erode the safety benefits of MagSafe, because there’s very little tolerance between the edges of the MagSafe interface and the sides of the Hub. Even if the charger broke free of the laptop itself, would it end up getting caught in the Hub and dragging the laptop to the floor?
I can’t categorically rule out that risk, but having yanked the power cable a few times, with one hand holding the laptop firm, the MagSafe cable came clean away every time. I’d say the risk of the MagSafe connector getting caught in the Hub is minimal., although it’s already out of stock after last week’s launch. It’s one to add to your wishlist for when stock returns.
