Salmon farming operations in Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour could be temporarily halted, Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek warns, amid a push to protect the endangered Maugean skate.

The federal environment minister says salmon farming operations in Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour could be temporarily halted, as part of a push to save the Maugean skate.

Earlier this month, the Tasmanian government announced $2.1 million in funding for the skate to "ensure its long-term survival". Ms Plibersek wrote a letter to the Tasmanian Premier warning she may have no choice but to temporarily halt farming operations."If the reconsideration finds that the salmon industry in Macquarie Harbour does not have the necessary environmental approvals, the EPBC Act … would require operations to pause while approvals are sort," she wrote.

"Yes, salmon is one industry that operates in Macquarie Harbour but there are absolutely no guarantees that taking the easy route and blaming salmon will help to save the skate, but what it will do is cost jobs and devastate communities," Mr Martin said.
