F1: Lando Norris crashed into the back of Oscar Piastri in the late stages of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Norris tried to overtake teammate Piastri for fourth-place in Montreal with just three laps remaining, but in going for a gap that was too narrow, crashed into the pit wall and the back of Piastri. The error ended his race and saw him slip to 22 points behind title leader Piastri, who was lucky to still finish in fourth.

The Briton doubled down when speaking to Sky Sports immediately after, saying that there was “no one to blame by myself”.In a separate interview, Norris admitted he had broke “rule number one” and that he was remorseful for letting the team down. “McLaren is my family, I race for them every single weekend. I try and do well for them, more than I often try and do well for myself,” he said. “So when I let them down like this, and when I make a fool of myself in a moment like today, I have a lot of regret in something like that. “So I’m not proud of that, and I feel bad, and I feel like I let my down my team. And that’s for me always the worst feeling. So of course, I really need to apologise to all of them. And Oscar as well.”Cameras caught Norris shaking hands with Piastri and saying sorry in what appeared to be a pleasant exchange. Piastri was heard saying: “It’s alright. I mean, I ended up alright”, and Norris is heard saying “all my fault”.Norris and Piastri were called to the FIA stewards after the race over the incident with the outcome of their investigation not clear yet. Team boss Andrea Stella said it was an incident that McLaren “definitely never want to see” despite their earlier predictions that it would. He added that the incident needed to be reviewed by the team in detail, but said it was clear that the contact came “because of a misjudgment” from Norris.“Just Lando misjudged the distance to the car ahead and therefore there was no malintent,” he said. “Lando owned it immediately, took responsibility for that, but certainly something to discuss and review.“Our principles are already in place, our drivers will have something to learn further and we go racing again. “It is absolutely a misjudgment that cost Lando quite a lot in the championship. It already cost for the team so definitely an incident that should have not happened.” Piastri boosted his lead in the drivers’ title race to 22 points with 198 ahead of Norris and Verstappen, who is third on 155. Russell is fourth on 136.“It’s not ideal for anyone,” said Piastri. “I’ve not actually seen the incident, so I don’t know exactly what happened, but if Lando has taken full responsibility then that’s how it goes I guess. “It was just a bit of a tricky race in general and not an ideal finish.” On his duel with Norris, he added: “It was fair, but he made quite a large move into Turn 10, I held my own into the chicane. It was definitely a tough battle, but a clean one up until that point. “I’ve not seen the incident, but I don’t think there was any bad intentions involved. I think it was just unfortunate really. “I will go and have a look -- we’re both fighting for a world championship and I’m very thankful to the team that they allow us to race. I don’t expect this to change anything in terms of that.”
