One of the country’s best-loved cooks, Maggie Beer, has made something of a habit of attending the Australia Day Awards. In 2010, she was named Senior Australian of the Year and followed it up two years later by being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
The Sydney-born cook came to public notice soon after moving to South Australia’s Barossa Valley in 1973, where she started a pheasant farm with husband Colin Beer. The farm led to an award-winning farm-to-table restaurant, a series of cookbooks, and later, a multimillion-dollar food business, Maggie Beer Products, making the likes of ice-cream, pâté, verjuice and pasta sauce.with chef Simon Bryant from 2006 to 2009 and has made regular appearances onSince 2014, Beer has directed much of her energy towards the Maggie Beer Foundation, focusing on improving food in aged care facilities.
