New Zealand qualified for the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals with a 73-0 win over Uruguay that granted them a crucial bonus point
Under the radar, or undetectable? Perhaps the latter is more appropriate given New Zealand’s stealth-bomber colour scheme and the Haka’s flying V formation. The main thing is that the All Blacks have qualified for the quarter-finals – and no one will fancy playing them as they search for a fourth title.
Cam Roigard’s early knock-on in the corner, falling over the try-line, meant New Zealand were forced to wait for their first score. It was not simply their own inaccuracy that frustrated them: Uruguay tore into their task with a complete absence of fear, tackling hard and using the ball intelligently when they could.
The black-clad full-back Damien McKenzie then skipped over and touched down, but again, New Zealand were pegged back when the TMO spotted a neck-grab by Richie Mo’unga. Penalty Uruguay. For their fans this spirited effort against the world’s greatest team was all wonderful fun with respect to the 80-minute drubbing many had expected.
