An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 has struck near Port Vila, Vanuatu, on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.
The extent of any damage was not immediately clear. A video posted on social media appeared to show a building that houses some diplomatic missions to Vanuatu — including those of Britain, France and New Zealand — with some damage to their structure, including buckled windows and debris that had crumbled from walls to the ground.
“We are aware of the news of a very significant earthquake near Port Vila,” he said. “We know there is now a very serious threat of tsunami.
