The rebooted Magnum P.I. will end with season 5 after NBC previously saved it from cancellation. A new version of the popular 1980s drama, which starred Tom Selleck, the show features Jay Hernandez in the lead role of private investigator Thomas Magnum. Though it was a reliable performer in the ratings at its previous home, CBS, licensing fees and high production costs led to CBS cancelling Magnum P.I. in May 2022.

Magnum P.I. season 5 has delivered well for NBC, though it represented a decline from its CBS numbers. That represents a 30 percent decline in total viewership from its time on CBS and a 43 percent slide in the coveted 18-49 age demographic. It should also be noted, however, that season 5 has so far aired on Sundays after reruns which may affect its performance.
When asked about the difference in ratings recently, an NBC executive expressed support for Magnum P.I. and struck an optimistic tone about its future. Now that future looks murky in terms of its streaming rights. The reboot's recent episodes are available on NBCUniversal's Peacock, while older seasons are on Paramount+, the streaming outlet for CBS. Viewers can rally for it once again, as they did when it was first cancelled, which speaks to the passion that the series evokes.
