Some travellers will be able to use the airport's passport-free system soon
Passengers travelling through one of the busiest airports in the world won't have to use their passports in a move to make travel easier and quicker. From 2024, Singapore's Changi Airport will introduce an automated immigration system which will allow some passengers to depart without passports, instead it will be done by using biometric data.
The upcoming changes reduces the need "for passengers to repeatedly present their travel documents at touch points and allow for more seamless and convenient processing," Teo added. Relying on biometric data, it means the likes of fingerprints and face recognition will be used to replace traditional paperwork and travel documents.
Biometrics will be used to create a "single token of authentication" that will be employed at various automated touch points. These could include baggage drop-off to immigration and boarding. However, it doesn't mean everyone can keep their passports at home. Teo says passports will still be required for many countries outside of Singapore that do not offer passport-free clearance.
