The Andrews government has announced a major change for Victorian drivers after increased demand for the 'minimal fuss' technology.

Full licence motorists in Ballarat can sign up for the pilot program from June through the Service Victoria or Vicroads websites.

Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Melissa Horne said the exciting change will decrease the “fuss” around verifying people’s identity. Mr Horne said the rollout is in response to a growing demand from Victorian drivers and will mimic a popular option available interstate in both New South Wales and South Australia. From July, full licence holders in Ballarat will be able to join a trial of digital licences, and we'll roll it out statewide by 2024.According to the NSW government, more than 75 per cent of drivers carry a digital driver licence since it was launched in November 2019.
