Nottinghamshire County Council is considering creating 'supersites' to address the issues of cramped recycling centres and traffic congestion. A review found that many of the existing centres were not suitable due to poor layout and limited space. The proposed changes aim to create larger sites that do not cause traffic problems and do not need to be closed when waste containers are moved. These alterations would save £1.7m per year and enhance the service for residents. The council is yet to decide on the locations for the new sites.

Recycling 'supersites' could be created as part of major changes aiming to cut queues and traffic at existing centres in Nottinghamshire . Council lors on Nottinghamshire County Council 's Place Committee will be asked to endorse a raft of changes on Wednesday, March 27, to tackle the problem of cramped recycling sites and the traffic impact they have on nearby roads. A review began in 2022 after concerns were expressed that some of the county’s 12 centres were not “fit for purpose”.

It found many of the locations suffered from poor layout and small sites, with no way to properly expand them. The new report calls for sites which do not create traffic issues on surrounding roads, and do not need to be closed whenever waste containers are moved. The outlined alterations would save £1.7m per year, as well as improve the service for residents. The possible scenarios would require larger new “supersites”, according to the council's report. No locations have been chosen yet, although there are a range of council-owned sites available. The report said small-scale changes should be ruled out in favour of a major shake-up. It noted residents said they would be happy with well-designed facilities which do not require queuing at the entrance, even if they have to travel further to reach them
