The Australian government has undergone “the biggest single review of the triple 0 service in over a decade” as a result of a 46-page report on Optus’ outage in November, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said.
Major reforms to emergency calls coming after 'biggest single review of the triple 0 service in over a decade' adopted
All of the recommendations will be adopted over the coming 12 to 18 months and major changes can be expected for the emergency call system, Minister Rowland told Sky News First Edition host Peter Stefanovic. Reforms to the emergency call service include the introduction of a ‘custodian’ that will monitor the service and telcos being required to test their phone lines more often.
One of the key elements was “sharing in real time, but also ensuring the government has at its disposal information it needs in the case of a mass outage to ensure the relevant agencies are notified and appropriate steps can be taken,” the Communications Minister said. “Having a much clearer framework for compensation and complaints in the case of a mass outage is one that the industry will develop,” she said.
