Contentious legislation paving the way for a shake-up of the NDIS recently passed parliament. But about a month out from changes starting to take effect, many participants remain in the dark about what it means for them.
The Hearnden's NDIS-funded sensory items help each child with their neurodivergence and complement their other interests, such as Liam's love for chickens.Less than a month out from the start of a major NDIS overhaul, many participants say they're in the dark about the changes.
"I've looked at the draft lists frantically to try and understand what's in and what's out," Ms Hearnden said. "What we need is for the agency to be really clear about what's happening, about what those changes mean for individuals and where can get support," Ms Kakoschke-Moore said. Ms Hearnden said she'd received no direct communication from anyone about what will change for her family.She said there was a lot of misinformation online and she was "constantly talking to other friends and family" who also had "absolutely no idea how to navigate this".
"When you are working deeply to listen to community through change and to provide the kind of assurance that people need by saying, 'this is how the system should be built', you do end up with uncertainty about what the end product might look like." The ABC asked the NDIA detailed questions about its communications and what it was doing to make sure everyone had the information they needed.
